Improving rivers for fisheries
Fisheries interests are afforded particular attention in works undertaken by the Agency, and in consultation and co-operation with Inland Fisheries, Department of Culture, Arts & Leisure (DCAL), appropriate measures are included in planned works to protect and encourage fish populations.
These include:
- Fishery groynes - These raise water levels locally and produce deep pools for fish. Water is aerated as it falls over the stones and this is beneficial to fish
- Fish passes - These are constructed to enable fish to overcome in-channel obstacles, e.g. weirs, and reach upstream spawning areas

- Trees and bushes - These are planted along river banks to provide shading for fish and a source of insects for food
- Fishing stands - These are constructed on the banks of loughs and rivers to facilitate local anglers
- Spawning gravel - This is placed on the bed of suitable rivers to provide habitat for egg laying fish, such as salmon and trout
