Assessment of flood defence schemes
A formal risk assessment methodology is applied within the prioritisation process in order to maximise the benefit secured from available resources. The main activities associated with the process are:
- Inspecting and surveying existing flood defences and analysing flood events to identify and assess flooding risks;
- Identifying schemes to address flooding risks;
- Designing and executing of major works;
- Advising DOE Planning Service on development in flood plains to avoid any increase in risk to life and property through flooding;
- Operate the Northern Ireland surface water hydrometric network stations to provide data on river flows as a basis for estimating flood flows;
- Develop strategy for flood flow estimation taking account of the methodology contained within the Flood Estimation Handbook;
- Formalise approval and monitoring procedures within project procurement and management of capital projects;
- Pilot aspects of Post Project Evaluation relevant to Agency programmes; and
- Review prioritisation programme.
